There is an abundance of guidelines and how to tutorials, videos, workshops, etc. that provide step-by-step guidance on how to accommodate students with disabilities. In addition, student services often provide accommodation requirement letters for students with disabilities (SWD) based on medical advice and common practices. While these may be helpful, they require that instructors, teaching assistants and others who are involved in university education to understand why they are needed and how to implement them as well as consider possible alternatives not specified such as reduced evaluation content instead of more time. Other typical activities such as group work and communicating with SWD are often not included in formal accommodation requirements and can be overlooked by instructors and teaching assistants but are as important as those formal requirements. Seeking advice from other instructors who are knowledgeable in supporting SWD as well as taking the initiative to communicate individually with a student can assist in navigating accommodations and finding suitable solutions. This can also assist in gaining experience for the instructor as well as supporting student self-advocacy.
