Youth Engagement in Solid Waste Management in City Corporation

There is a huge amount of solid waste (organic and inorganic) generated every day in these wards, but the waste is not dumped properly in the city’s selective places due to lack of workforce, shortage of available land, people’s awareness of solid waste management, and its impact. The primary aim is to explore the scope of youth engagementYouth engagement in solid waste management, which is a significant focus of different research in the dynamic area. Solid waste is a big threat to the community and directly creates hampers to the environment and public healthPublic health. In this aspect, the selected ward is to explore the gaps and challenges and to get a real picture by using through qualitative approach, questionnaire survey, focus group discussion (FGD), and key interment interview (KII) with the help of 101 household respondents, among 13 cleaners from the City corporation (including 03 females) and 08 others who are the respondents in this research. Ward no 19 is a height density area where total HH is 12,469 and the population is 48,629. Determining the youth of the whole respondents, only 28 (27%) instead of 101 respondents were the lowest youth respondents; males 6 (21%) and females 22 (79%). A questionnaire survey was carried out on different aspects and found people’s food wasteFood waste, plant and animal-based waste, plastic are the main components, as well as volume and waste transfer mode, distance of source to dumping station, labor engagement, income, education level, advantages and disadvantages of waste management, sexual abuse and harassment, etc. Data was collected from household level and youth. There are 21 youth respondents, especially female respondents from city workers, who reported about the source to the dumping station 3 (100%) distance 0–30 m, as they are road cleaners. On the other hand, the male respondents with van pullers reported the distance from the source to the dumping station is far. 7 (39%) said their distance is 500–700 m, second far is 4 (22%) from 700 to 900 m, others 3 (17%) from 300 to 500 m and rest 2 (11%) are same distance accordingly 100–300 m and 900–1000. The city-selected dumping station is far away from the source or secondary source, so male engagement is needed more than females. About the overall scenario of this thesis, the waste management systemWaste management system is very poor, so their economic conditions are not good, as well as insufficient workforce for waste management. However, the Bangladesh government and city authorities have been working to improve their waste management systemWaste management system.
