Economics of Solid Waste Management

Human activities produce enormous quantity of wastes that enter into land, air, and water which makes the environment more vulnerable. Bangladesh has been recognized as a medium-developed country due to its rapid industrialization, which has led to quick urbanization,thereby increasing the urban population and enhancing living standards. The waste generation has been increasing and deteriorating the impacts on the environment. This study focuses on generation and systematic management of municipal solid wastes of Munshiganj PourashavaMunshiganj pourashava study from economic viewpoint. Collection, processingProcessing facilities, and disposal of municipal solid wastes widely vary throughout the world according to the nature of waste generation and economic factors. The inefficiency of the whole process in less-developed countries creates detrimental effects on the environment and health hazards to the inhabitants. The economic activities related with solid waste management are an important part of it. This simultaneously reduces solid waste disposal and provides benefits to the society minimizing public healthPublic health risks. The study found unsatisfactory management of solid waste in different locations. The dumping yard spreads foul odorsOdor complaints, contaminates water, degrades land, and pollutes air. Environmental pollution is the resultant effect of it. It has no recyclingRecycling or any other economic activity with the valuable wastes. Two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are operating there who cover a small area. The inhabitants are not interested to pay more for proper disposal of waste. The local authority has budget limitation and they collect the wastes and disposing to the dumping yard. The solid waste management processWaste management process of the Pourashava should be modernized without any delay to safeguard the local environment and human health.
