Cultural Code: The Multicultural Ethos of Hawaiʻi
摘要
One operational code of considerable note exists among long-time residents of the Hawaiian Islands, who conduct day-to-day living in accordance with 12 “Aloha Zen” principles derived from Native Hawaiian Aloha and Japanese Buddhism. Although the Islands are now a part of the United States, the history of Hawai‘i demonstrates that the two cultures did not assimilate to American cultures because they were repelled by White racist rule while a territory of the United States before statehood and therefore able to survive almost intact. Barack Obama, one of many persons who learned the 12 ethical principles of the Multicultural Ethos while growing up in Honolulu, provides detailed descriptions of each principle of the operational code. Today, new residents and tourists discover a welcoming in the Islands that they may have never experienced before, while those in the continental United States are unaware why the Islands live in such racial harmony by following a unique operational code.
