The art of rhetoric has always been focused on speakers and speaking, but political talk requires the art of listening as much as the art of speaking. Although we praise good speakers, good listening is more rare and requires more virtue than good speaking. After describing the art and virtues of good listening, I argue that good listening should be taught in our schools. We do more for civic friendship by listening well than by speaking well.
