Medicinal plants are plants whose parts contain bioactive compounds with therapeutic properties. These plants are used in the prevention and treatment of various diseases due to the presence of compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenes. The formulation of these herbs involves preparing and combining them into multiple forms, such as pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, or personal care products, while ensuring their efficacy and safety. Over the past decade, extensive research has been conducted on the standardization and quality control of medicinal plants. Standardization involves determining and regulating the active compound content within a plant product to ensure uniformity and effectiveness. This process includes characterizing active ingredients, conducting stability assessments, and establishing effective dosages. Recent advancements in analytical techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry (MS), have significantly enhanced the ability to characterize the active constituents of medicinal plants accurately. These techniques have significantly improved the quality and safety of herbal products. However, genetic diversity, cultivation conditions, harvesting practices, and post-harvest processes can impact the composition and final quality of these products. Therefore, developing comprehensive guidelines for cultivating, harvesting, and processing medicinal plants is essential. Ultimately, advancing effective and safe formulations from medicinal herbs requires interdisciplinary collaboration, extensive clinical research, and establishing international standards to fully harness the potential of these natural resources in enhancing human health.
