Blood-Borne and Parasitic Infections: Role of Phytoformulations
摘要
Blood-borne and parasitic diseases transmitted by pathogenic viruses, bacteria, various protozoan and helminths are a significant global health threat. Especially in resource limited countries where multidrug resistance, drug toxicity, and access to therapy are challenging. Phytoformulations have abundant bioactive constituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids that have been shown to have antiviral, antiparasitic, and immunomodulatory properties. They inhibit the entry, replication of pathogens, and promote host immunity with the added benefit of cost-effectiveness and low toxicity. However, they have issues with their adoption, such as limited clinical trials, phytochemical variability, and specific regional regulations. To treat blood-borne and parasitic infections, the therapeutic potential and constraints of phytochemicals are discussed in this chapter. In the era of antimicrobial resistance, analytical breakthroughs such as nanotechnology delivery systems, synergistic therapies, and artificial intelligence can standardize and globalize phytoformulations.
