The capital dredging of 17 million tonnes of seabed material for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel project, an 18 km long immersed tunnel project connecting Germany and Denmark, was completed in the autumn of 2023. The major dredging project included from the very start planning for beneficial use of all the dredged seabed material. The vast majority of this is has been deposited behind a 7 km long rockwork breakwater along the Danish coast creating a 400 m wide land reclamation. Ambitious plans for creating new coastal landscapes working with nature within this land reclamation is part of the project. Already now, certain elements of these coastal landscapes have been constructed and new nature and habitats are emerging as part of the land reclamation. This paper will provide a status for the construction and development of these emerging coastal landscapes and new habitats. An overview and the underlying ideas and assessments on how the project is planned to create coastal landscapes making use of the dredged material will be presented. In addition, plans to create artificial reefs in Danish as well as German waters as part of the project will be explained.
