Women remain significantly underrepresented in the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) industry. This study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to explore the challenges that women experience in the ICT environment and strategies that can be implemented with a Society 5.0 perspective. A PRISMA approach was used. Relevant academic sources were identified from ACM Digital Library, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, and ScienceDirect databases. Women face many different challenges within the ICT field. Some of these challenges faced by women in ICT are common across the global scale. Other challenges are unique to certain environments or cultural factors within a country. The findings reveal that the common challenges experienced by women can be categorised into professional challenges, socio-cultural challenges, and educational barriers. From the perspective of Society 5.0, where technological advancements are linked to societal needs, it is important to promote an inclusive and diverse ICT work environment. This will foster innovation, creative solutions, and improved problem-solving, which is pivotal to Society 5.0. Various stakeholders can be leveraged to address the barriers of women in ICT. Some of these stakeholders include ICT companies, other women who are actively pursuing ICT careers and have successfully navigated the challenges that arise, and educational institutions. The research conducted in this systematic literature review can be used to implement solutions to encourage and empower women to pursue ICT careers.
