The estimation of Direction-of-Arrival (DOA) of radio signals in a smart antenna system (SAS) is crucial in various applications, including air and space navigation, radar, sonar, and other systems. In this paper, a proposed method is presented for implementing and testing the Capon DOA estimation algorithm on an FPGA platform. In this method, the software features of MATLAB are leveraged and the algorithm code is modified to accommodate the hardware features of the FPGA platform. The method is an integration of MATLAB software and FPGA platform. The proposed method addresses the problem of hardware complexity connected with the FPGA platform, and all the results of DOA measurements are shown on the FPGA platform. The performance of the Capon algorithm is tested on the FPGA platform taking into account the effects of the number of signal samples and SNR on DOA estimation accuracy.
