Governance and Language, Domination and Resistance: A Closing Summary
摘要
Governance of higher education is the focus of this book, specified by considering the role of languages and academic voices. A present trend in many countries involves attacks on individual academics and groups, or systematic control to dismantle and reshape higher education by right-wing conservative governments. This chapter discusses the language policy and the dominance of English in the Ethiopian academy and the formerly oppressive but now uncertain role of Afrikaans in South Africa. The chapter also discusses the neoliberal interventions of business models and their negative effect in South African universities. Alongside this is the movement of Swedish higher education towards neoliberalism and the negative impact of under-resourcing, mismanagement and neglect of higher education, as well as the silencing of critical voices, in the USA. The chapter concludes with the possibility of collaboration and resistance for a better future.
