Love as Axiological Quake-Bringer: A Volitional Account of Love
摘要
In this chapter, I argue against treating love as a monosemous concept, favoring a broad conception of love which covers the polysemous ways in which we may speak of love and the various ways in which we may love and be loved. Drawing upon Harry Frankfurt, who characterizes love as a ‘configuration of the will’, I diverge from typical psychological conceptions of love as a complex emotion by placing particular emphasis on the volitional dimension of love and how it influences our thoughts and feelings. In doing so, I achieve two important outcomes: (1) I allow for the possibility of investigating the various forms of love without reducing the concept to one of these many forms; and (2) I bring forth an account which tries to account for the significance of love and its role as a ‘quake-bringer’ at the heart of our psychic life.
