Death as Companion
摘要
Do we shy away from death as a dark and looming prospect, or do we step through a door to a realm where we discover its hidden or unexpected meanings? To answer this question, a diversity of possibilities are explored: the remarkable changes in people after a Near-Death Experience, death reflection as portrayed in Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol, a research project on the effects of “death reflection” where participants are invited to imagine their own death after a disaster, and the experience of feeling dead inside. The author discusses his own experience when reflecting on the death of some of his close colleagues. An overview of the differences between rejecting or accepting death on the level of personal meaning is presented. To cope with death anxiety, some guidelines are presented which may be helpful to accept death as a rewarding part of life.
