According to Ewald Hering, there are six elementary colours—red, yellow, green, blue, black and white. Here I argue that a careful examination of experience—one’s own and reports of others—will show that there are more elementary colours than Hering recognizes. In particular, there are good reasons to think that those of us with normal colour vision tend to experience also orange, purple and brown as elementary. I also suggest that some may experience a few further colours as elementary, including grey and pink, and light and dark blue.
