The book closes by observing that as we are drawn further into the dataistic episteme, we are confronted by a series of existential crises. Dataistic power-knowledge is shown to actively impede political, individual, even economic freedoms. As the tools of its production are concentrated in fewer hands, an unprecedented imbalance is developing—one that allows elites to throttle democracy, human rights, even competition. It is also being used to stifle the production of knowledge itself. Yet these dataistic technologies also offer unprecedented opportunities to protect our environment, transform our understanding of reality, and enhance both the quality and duration of life. This chapter outlines these possibilities and the choices facing humanity as it enters an uncertain future.
