Why Bio-Inspired Design?
摘要
Expanding on the perspectives-taking approach, bio-inspired design is introduced as a powerful framework for fostering creativity, innovation, and systems thinking within engineering education. Bio-inspired design—the process of drawing inspiration from biological systems to develop technologies, products, or services—provides a relevant and engaging way to explore how nature’s strategies can support innovation. By using analogy-making, bio-inspired design enables those without a biology background to identify elegant and functional patterns in nature and apply them to human-designed systems. This approach brings a fresh perspective to problem-solving by emphasizing both human needs and ecological insight, inviting transdisciplinary collaboration across science, engineering, and the humanities. This chapter offers an overview of bio-inspired design, highlights its natural connections to engineering disciplines, and provides motivation for its integration into the engineering classroom to encourage broader participation and retention, particularly among students driven by service and societal impact.
