The architectural remains of historic buildings and monuments can often be preserved in environments with extreme environmental conditions. This fact is not only surprising, but also a very interesting field of study for today’s researchers. A similar case was the analysis of the architectural remains of the fort of Vasiladi in the Messolonghi lagoon. Vasiladi is approximately 3 km away from the city of Messolonghi. During the Greek War of Independence (1821–1827), the city endured a significant siege. Vasiladi played a key role in the resupply of the city and as a departure base in every important battle in the lagoon. Its strategic position made it a key defensive bastion for the town of Messolonghi. In February 1826, during the prolonged siege of Messolonghi, Ottoman forces under Hussein Bey captured Vasiladi, marking a significant advancement in their campaign. The fort’s location within the lagoon provided natural defenses, as the shallow waters hindered large naval vessels from approaching, thereby offering some protection to the inhabitants and defenders of Messolonghi. However, the fall of Vasiladi to Ottoman forces tightened the encirclement of Messolonghi, contributing to the dire conditions that led to the heroic but tragic exodus of its citizens in April 1826. Αerial photogrammetry was implemented over the Vasiladi islet and the remains of the fort structure. This technique allowed for the detailed mapping and three-dimensional documentation of the site, providing critical spatial and morphological data. The integration of photogrammetric analysis enhanced the understanding of the structural arrangement and its interaction with the surrounding lagoon environment, offering new perspectives on the fort’s construction and its resilience in challenging conditions. The Messolonghi Lagoon itself is a vital ecosystem, protected under the Ramsar Convention and included in the Natura 2000 network, highlighting its environmental importance alongside its historical significance ( Ramsar.org ). Efforts to document and digitally reconstruct the Vasiladi Fort are crucial in preserving its legacy, offering insights into its historical role and ensuring that future generations can appreciate this emblematic site of Greek heritage. The goal of this research was to digitally reconstruct the fort structure. By combining advanced aerial surveying techniques with onsite documentation and sketching, the precise location and dimensions of the fort’s remains, both above and below the waterline, were captured. While much of the structure above water has been heavily eroded or lost, the shallow waters of the Messolonghi Lagoon have preserved significant underwater remnants. These submerged sections were thoroughly studied through collaborative efforts involving onsite inspection and detailed site analysis. Modern technology and insights from historical archives, were used to revive the Vasiladi Fort, presenting it anew through a detailed digital reconstruction that will contribute to our understanding of its historical and cultural significance.
