We formally introduce Hasse diagrams for visualizing the logical structure of an experiment and distinguish treatment, unit, and experiment structures. We show how to derive a linear model corresponding to a Hasse diagram and discuss formulating ANOVA models as linear regressions using dummy variables. We directly derive the correct model specifications for R from the Hasse diagrams and elucidate their direct correspondence to the linear model.
