Aquaculture, the most rapidly expanding domain in modern food production, is pivotal in meeting the surging global need for fish, a vital source of nutrition for billions of people. However, conventional aquaculture practices are associated with significant environmental challenges, including habitat destruction, pollution, biodiversity loss, and disease outbreaks. Organic aquaculture has emerged as a promising alternative, advocating an ecosystem-based approach that emphasizes biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and animal welfare. It employs environmentally friendly methods such as alternative feed sources, closed-loop systems, and innovative technologies like Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS). The integration of intelligent automation and learning algorithms further enhances production efficiency and environmental sustainability. Despite its advantages, the adoption of organic aquaculture is constrained by challenges, including high production costs, vulnerability to disease outbreaks, and complex certification processes. Nevertheless, the growing consumer demand for sustainable seafood presents a significant opportunity to scale organic aquaculture, especially with the support of favorable policies and simplified certification procedures. This chapter highlights the pivotal role of research and innovation in overcoming these barriers and advancing organic aquaculture as a practical solution for advancing worldwide food security and fostering ecological sustainability. With targeted efforts, organic aquaculture can make a substantial contribution to addressing global challenges, fostering a harmonious balance between human needs and environmental stewardship.
