Food loss and waste can and should be drastically reduced and prevented moving towards a more sustainable food system. Many initiatives have already taken place around the world to tackle the food waste problem. The CHORIZO project, Horizon Europe EU-funded project, takes a step further by improving the understanding of how social norms influence behaviour related to Food Loss and Waste (FLW) generation. This understanding is achieved through research activities that focus on different contexts where food loss and waste happens; namely food waste (FW) generated at food processing and packaging, household, school, food services, hospitality, and food bank level. This is crucial since social norms and how they impact behaviour is highly context dependent. This knowledge was fundamental to develop tools that support the innovation within FLW prevention and reduction activities: (I) A FLW prevention/reduction index that can guide food actors in prioritizing alternative actions based on previous results; (II) The FLW rapid appraisal tool that provides actors with knowledge on the key social norms that drive FLW in their contextual environment; (III) The CHORIZO ‘Insighter’ datahub that serves as database of empirical evidence to actors pursuing FLW prevention initiatives; (IV) A sector-based guidance to support different types of actors from the food system; and (V) Communication and science education packages and capacity building actions, which will contribute in changing social norms towards zero FLW at the consumer, corporate and policy level.

摘要
