“We’re gentrifying. It’s all good!” Comparing Representations of Gentrification and Displacement in South Park’s SoDaSoPa to Cape Town, South Africa
摘要
This chapter explores how South Park’s satirical portrayals of gentrification resonate with young people navigating precarity in rapidly changing urban environments worldwide. By reading episodes such as “The City Part of Town” and “Night of the Living Homeless” alongside youth perspectives from the Bo-Kaap (a historic neighbourhood in Cape Town, South Africa, undergoing intense redevelopment), the chapter shows how media representations and real-world struggles mirror one another. It highlights how young people are routinely excluded from decisions that reshape their communities, revealing the global precarity of youth voices in processes of neighbourhood change.
