Scribes in the Service of the Swedish Provincial Administration, 1730–1808
摘要
The chapter is a prosopographic study of the scribes, aka low-ranking governmental clerks in the service of Uusimaa and Häme provincial office between 1730 and 1808, when Finland was part of the Swedish Realm. Through both quantitative analysis and case studies, it analyses their backgrounds, tenures of service, wages and job descriptions, social standing, and careers after their tenure as scribe ended. The scribes are seen as a transitional phenomenon between the traditional and the modern administrative system: they were essential to the functionality of the modernising Swedish state administration, but at the same time, were seen as personal servants or clients of their superiors without a formal position in the Crown’s bureaucracy.
