Students’ Perception on How ChatGPT Help Them in Learning: An Open-Ended Qualitative Survey at a Private University in Malaysia
摘要
This qualitative study explores Malaysian private university students’ perceptions of ChatGPT as a learning device. As AI chatbots gain prominence in education, understanding student views is crucial, particularly concerning ethical use and impact on learning efficacy. Data was collected via an online survey from 436 students across academic levels and study modes. Thematic analysis revealed that students perceive ChatGPT as beneficial for enhancing understanding, improving efficiency, stimulating idea generation, and providing personalized support. Specifically, students value ChatGPT's ability to clarify complex concepts, streamline research, aid in brainstorming, and offer tailored assistance. However, concerns exist regarding potential over-reliance, information accuracy, and the need for responsible integration into academic practices. The findings highlight a dual perspective: while students recognize ChatGPT's potential to augment learning, they also express reservations about its uncritical adoption. This study contributes to the body of literature on AI in education, providing valuable insights into student experiences within the Malaysian context. It emphasizes the importance of fostering digital literacy and ethical awareness to ensure ChatGPT are used to improve rather than hamper genuine intellectual growth.
