Sustainable buildings offer significant economic, environmental, and human-centered benefits. However, studies reveal that many fail to meet their projected performance targets. One key reason for this discrepancy is the limited consideration of building users’ needs, leading to behaviors and interactions that contradict the intended performance outcomes. Addressing this gap requires new approaches to better understand and integrate user expectations into sustainable building design. Incorporating Human-Centric Design (HCD) into sustainable building development is expected to enhance efficiency and performance by highlighting users and their needs. This paper therefore proposes a conceptual framework for integrating HCD principles into the planning and development of sustainable buildings. The framework maps human-centered design principles from the International Organization for Standardization (2019)—Ergonomics of Human-System Interaction (ISO 9241–210: Human-Centered Design for Interactive Systems) onto the sustainable building design and development process. Building on these principles, the framework consists of four key cyclic elements: interaction among key stakeholder groups, identification of essential inputs for HCD, user evaluation of building design simulations, and iterative building design. By integrating HCD into sustainable building development, these buildings can become more efficient through prioritizing building users, their needs and activities, within their specific contexts and environments. This building user-focused approach enhances functionality and usability, increasing the likelihood of achieving sustainable building performance targets.

摘要
