Multimodal Ocean Literacy for the Ocean Decade
摘要
New media products about the Ocean and Ocean science draw on multiple modes of communication (images, videos, three-dimensional objects, virtual and augmented objects, bodily engagement, and interaction with both real and artificial other intelligences). Learners must be able to decode these multiple modes and their associated background commitments and be able to work critically with them in making meaning. Educational efforts must consider learners’ worldviews, values, and modal preferences (individual and cultural) as well as issues of access to technologies and resources. In this chapter, we report on three efforts utilizing multimodality to engage learners in developing Ocean Literacy in new ways. Research and programming in Taiwan and the United States using multimodal research and evaluation tools as well as platforms and contexts for teaching and learning are described. By embracing diverse modes of communication and understanding, we may foster deeper bonds with the Ocean and may inspire action to preserve a healthy Ocean and biodiversity. Ultimately, by equipping learners with the ability to engage with diverse forms of Ocean-related content as both consumers and producers, we contribute to the collective effort to understand and address marine environmental issues, paving the way for a more sustainable future for our Ocean.
