Bridging the Worlds of Science and Communication to Foster Literacy on Ocean-Climate-Biodiversity Interactions
摘要
Despite its crucial importance for the climate, the Ocean has long been overlooked by decision makers and the general public. However, in alignment with the political and scientific milestones achieved at COP21—with the integration of the Ocean in the Paris Agreement preamble—and with the release of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, the Ocean & Climate Platform and its members have dedicated the past decade to highlighting the crucial role the Ocean plays by bridging the gap between science and decision-making. This chapter aims to underscore the Ocean & Climate Platform’s mission of promoting and advancing understanding of the interactions between the Ocean, climate, and biodiversity among decision-makers and the general public through its “knowledge dissemination” working group. Convening experts from diverse disciplines spanning natural and social sciences, as well as incorporating both scientific and non-academic perspectives, including communication and science education, this group has been devoted to the creation of science-based and easily accessible content. Drawing from its participation in the French governmental review of IPCC reports, notably the Special Report on the Ocean & Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (2019) and the Sixth Assessment Report (2021–2023), the Ocean & Climate Platform has leveraged this collective expertise around the production of two publications of Ocean Literacy: Ocean & Climate Change: New Challenges (2019) and What Ocean for tomorrow? Marine ecosystems in a changing climate: insights from the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report (2023). The efforts of the Ocean & Climate Platform’s knowledge dissemination working group and the publications curated since 2018 align closely with the ambition of the UN Ocean Decade to “restore humanity’s relationship with the Ocean.” Through collaborative endeavours, the Platform contributes to fostering a deeper understanding of the Ocean’s role in the climate system and empower stakeholders to make informed decisions for a sustainable future.
