Squadron Supreme: Utopia in the Face(s) of Anti-Utopia
摘要
Building on the previous chapter’s material, I’ll now explore the core of Nighthawk and his (tangled) resistance to the Squadron Supreme’s Utopia Program, which centers on a commitment to the Anti-Utopia that, in this case, seeks a vision of the future extrapolated from an idealized past, or what I’m calling the retro-probable utopia. And, as it turns out, the retro-probable utopia is a recurring element in the U.S. political landscape. However, by reading against the grain of what Gruenwald may have intended with the series, I suggest that Squadron Supreme’s approach to the utopia problematic also allows us to frame the story as a late critical utopia, and in doing so, keeps the series open to Utopia even in the face(s) of Anti-Utopia.
