Voices from the Grassroots Intergenerational Movement for Climate Education and Action in New York State
摘要
The state of climate change education (CCE) has become a critical concern as young people demand action from educators and policymakers to prepare them for a rapidly changing world. In the U.S., state-level CCE initiatives have been slow to develop. The fragmented nature of CCE has led to an uneven and often inadequate educational response, despite its potential to inspire climate action among youth. This chapter highlights a grassroots movement in New York led by the Climate and Resilience Education Task Force (CRETF), a coalition of youth activists and intergenerational stakeholders advocating for comprehensive CCE policy. The chapter reflects on the role of grassroots activism in advancing climate change education, emphasizing youth leadership, community building, and strategic engagement with policymakers. It examines the movement’s successes and strategies in co-writing state legislation and its impact on educational practices, revealing the challenges of navigating political, administrative, and social barriers. The chapter also underscores the importance of inclusive, intergenerational approaches to policy advocacy in addressing the climate crisis, illustrating the power of collective action in shaping educational systems to better prepare future generations for climate resilience.
