Preparing the Next Generation of Latinos to Thrive by Advancing Science-Based, Climate-Resilient Parenting Through Media and Local Communities A Science-Based Approach to Effective Communication With, and Engagement of Diverse Latino Families
摘要
It is imperative that families prepare to foster resilient children, who can thrive during the climate crisis. This chapter focuses on Latinos, who are among the most impacted by climate change and one of the fastest growing sectors of the U.S. child population. It highlights the multi-disciplinary research process that led to a science-based approach to communicating with and engaging Latinos. This entails partnerships among STEM experts, media outlets, and community organizations. The approach is grounded in a communication research design for public education. It begins by understanding Latinos’ concerns, practices, interests, and their trusted sources. Culturally relevant messages that address these concerns should take into account diversity among Latino communities, while building on shared values and culture. A commonality among parents is that they play a critical role in rearing their children. Finally, the chapter discusses findings from the National Science Foundation-funded Roadmap/Camino for Climate Resilient Parenting project. This project convened child development scientists, working with climate scientists and educators, to develop effective parenting strategies that can support healthy child development with the skills needed to contribute to mitigation and thrive.Constructive/active hope Using a research-to-practice approach, the program works with community organizations and media to engage parents in preparing the next generation, who will inherit the stewardship of a changing environment.
