Climate change is a socio-scientific issue (SSI) due to its complex interplay among scientific, societal, economic, and political dimensions. The SSI approach, which positions complex issues as central to learning experiences, has been employed to teach climate change. This chapter synthesizes research on the SSI approach to climate change education, utilizing the Essential Features of SSI Teaching & Learning framework. This study reviews 30 articles published between 2010 and 2023, analyzing how climate change has been taught using the SSI approach. The findings highlight the effectiveness of SSI-based instruction in enhancing students’ understanding of climate change, critical thinking skills, and attitudes toward science and science learning. Despite positive outcomes, research gaps remain in effectively integrating media literacy in climate change education and developing tools to support systems thinking. The findings also suggest potential revisions to the SSI framework to highlight promoting civic engagement and taking informed action in teaching climate change as an SSI.

摘要
