If we look at the field of family business itself in terms of family and lineage, then Joseph Astrachan can be qualified as the youngest member of the first generation in America. From this vantage point he recounts his serendipitous path originating in, moving away from and then back to family business, his joint efforts with illustrious colleagues, mentors and students to put family business on the map in research and practice, as well as the vision and yardstick for his own contribution.
