Will Antiracist (Re)Awakening Wither in the Wake of a War on Woke?
摘要
This chapter critically examines the current backlash against antiracist movements in the UK, framed within the broader cultural resistance to so-called "woke" ideologies. Penny Rabiger explores how the politicisation of antiracism and equity work has led to a climate of fear and defensiveness in educational and institutional settings. Drawing on recent policy shifts, media narratives, and lived experiences, the chapter interrogates whether the momentum of antiracist (re)awakening—sparked by global movements such as Black Lives Matter—can be sustained amid increasing hostility. Rabiger argues that the "war on woke" is not merely rhetorical but has tangible consequences for equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts. The chapter calls for renewed commitment to systemic change, grounded in critical reflection and collective action, and questions how educators and institutions can resist regression while fostering meaningful progress.
