Phytoremediation of Chromium: A Review
摘要
The usage of chemical fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides, hormones, soil regulators, sludge in the agriculture sector resulted in toxicity, depletion of nutrients, and pollution of soil. The basic reason of using these is rapid and uncontrolled rise in population, urbanization, deforestation and industrialization. The result of all these activities finally led to metal contamination of the ecosystem especially chromium, nickel, lead, mercury, zinc, and cadmium. Various plants can be successfully used for removal of metals from the ecosystem through the process of phytoremediation. In this review paper, sources of chromium contamination, health effects, mechanism of phytoremediation including phytoextraction, phytostabilization, rhizofiltration, phytovolatilization, rhizodegradation, properties of plants used for phytoremediation, factors controlling rate of phytoremediation, advantages, and limitations of the phytoremediation technique have been summarized.
