This chapter briefly examines the history of the word “liberal” in America since the New Deal. Roosevelt characterized his supporters as “liberals” in the belief that this would increase public support for his policies, but in the decades that followed, successful Democratic politicians avoided the “liberal” label. This chapter offers some speculations about why.
