This chapter briefly presents a powerful tool for solving enumeration problems, the method of generating functions. This is a tool of primary importance in mathematics. We restrict ourselves to applications and examples coming, for the most part, from the enumeration of integer compositions, integer partitions, permutations, words, and set partitions.
