This chapter serves as a short introduction to some fundamental mathematical notions from elementary arithmetic and set theory and methods of proof, as essential preparation for the following chapters. An emphasis is given on the method of mathematical induction and concepts such as that of a map between sets, of a recursively defined sequence, and of divisibility in the set of natural numbers.
