The Will and Representations: The Need to Prevent and Resolve a Crisis of Representations in the Organizational Life
摘要
Arthur Schopenhauer’s view on world (as will and representation) recalls the crucial importance of the “Will to live” and the need for representations of worldly realities. However, the Schopenhauerian notion of the “Will to live” is philosophically inconsistent since it does not take the facts of natural history into account. The “Will to live” has not always remained the same. The advent of human species has deeply modified the “Will to live”: the evolving human intellect and the extended notion of freedom have changed everything. The Schopenhauerian interconnectedness of representations is quite frail. Some representations are much more influential than others. Moreover, Schopenhauer did not make any basic link between ethics and representations. Nonetheless, dehumanizing representations lead to unethical behaviours. The antecedents of a crisis of representations (the will to power; moral apathy and non-intervention; the denial of moral responsibilities) should be taken seriously. Otherwise, crises of representations could not be efficiently prevented. Institutionalizing ethical concerns in the organization and improving the efficiency of corporate governance structures, procedures, and strategies may allow executives and directors to prevent and resolve crises of representations more efficiently.
