Anti-Aging Properties of Bituminous Binders Containing a Biogenic Component
摘要
For many years, the road industry has been developing various sustainable solutions to reduce environmental impact including development of durable bituminous binders and use of bio-based materials. This paper investigates the durability (anti-aging) properties of bitumen containing a biogenic plant-based oil derived from the forest and paper industry. Laboratory aging was performed on bituminous binders, asphalt mixes, as well as the used biomaterial. Field samples of asphalt were also taken from road sections after several years of in-service. The binder materials were subjected to a wide range of tests, from conventional and rheological methods to various chemical analyses, such as fractional composition (SARA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). Results indicate that the bitumen containing the biogenic component is more aging-resistant as compared to reference bitumen. The anti-aging effect of the biogenic material is well supported by chemical analyses.
