Quantum Circuits Compilation for Superconducting Quantum Processing Units: A Systematic Mapping Study

Quantum computing has attracted considerable attention in computer science and optimization, driven by hardware and software progress in Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) systems and quantum error correction. Recent surveys highlight this growing interest across various domains. Quantum Circuit Compilation (QCC) converts high-level quantum algorithms into hardware-specific operations. This systematic mapping study examines QCC advancements for superconducting, gate-based NISQ architectures from 2020 to 2024, exploring publication trends, collaboration patterns, prevalent algorithmic methods, and evaluation approaches. The study reveals opportunities to enhance exact and heuristic methods, increase noise-aware algorithm development, and expand experimentation on physical quantum hardware.
