In this chapter, we further develop, and systematically introduce, the mathematical framework which we began to develop in the preceding chapter. It will be discussed why this framework is suitable for modeling living systems. We will also have the opportunity to comment on the meaning of some of the mathematical tools we preliminarily introduced in the preceding chapter.
