Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the life-threatening manifestation of venous thromboembolism. PE diagnosis is time critical as early identification and prompt treatment significantly reduces the risk of death and severe complications. Computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) is the imaging modality of choice for the diagnosis of PE. In addition to the visual analysis of the morphological abnormalities in the pulmonary circulation, quantification of the vascular obstruction and right ventricular dysfunction facilitates risk stratification and prognostication to inform therapeutic decisions.
