Evaluation of Pedestrian Crossings in Doboj Based on Dashboard Camcorder Recordings
摘要
Pedestrian crossings belong to conflict areas between protected and unprotected road users, so their proper design to assure visibility is critical. Dashboard camcorder recordings were used for the evaluation of exemplary 13 pedestrian crossings in Doboj from the driver’s perspective. The preliminary evaluation reported herein included the road width (estimated from the number of ‘zebra’ stripes), the arrangement of traffic lanes, the relevant road signs, and the road markings, along with the extent of their erosion. An on-site assessment was also conducted to cross-check the outcome from a pedestrian’s perspective. Among the analysed crossings, in 4 cases the pedestrians had to cross three traffic lanes, albeit they were controlled by traffic lights, in 3 cases the width of the two-lane road was excessive, up to circa 9.5 m. Three of the crossings were mid-block; one of those through the excessively broad street. Traffic signs were not consistently located and in 5 cases they were missing altogether. The ‘zebra’ stripes were significantly worn (average erosion 25%, median 12%), which was most likely due to improper selection of road marking materials. During the visit in the field, the observations from the dashboard camcorder recordings were confirmed. The dashboard camcorder recordings were found to be an efficient and reliable data collection tool for the assessment. Because the poor condition of pedestrian crossings may contribute to inadequate road safety, some easy-to-implement improvements are suggested.
