Psychiatry training presents unique opportunities to engage in advocacy for patients and their communities at the institutional, community, and legislative levels. Residency training programs can foster an advocacy mindset by cultivating a culture of recognition of how structures and systems contribute to health and healthcare disparities, through emphasizing the social determinants of health, awareness of ethnic and cultural contexts in communities, and social policy inequities. Practical strategies to engage residents in understanding specific advocacy needs of various community groups and ways to integrate advocacy into their patient care and program culture are discussed.
