Automated Optical Inspection Cell with Delta Robot for Printed Circuit Board Assemblies

AOI (Automated Optical Inspection) became a crucial step in PCB assembly processes as robots can provide automation solutions to improve this quality control method by offering flexibility and increasing the process speed. Delta robots are chosen in industrial processes for their speed and precision and these two assets could make them a choice for an AOI application. Collaborative robots are versatile and safe to use for manipulating sensitive objects and combining their performance with a delta robot used for AOI, a fully automated robotic cell for quality inspection and sorting of PCB assemblies can be developed. The paper presents a proposal of such an automated system. The proper lighting on the PCB is designed, a performant camera is chosen depending on the size of the PCB and the working distance by means of an original software application and an original cemented doublet assembly is designed (as a customized camera objective suitable for a specific PCB dimension at the chosen working distance between the PCB and the camera end-effector.
