Introduction
摘要
Music in literature, literature as music, literature’s triangulation with music and subjectivity, and music and literature’s interplay with gender—these are all of the subjects of Music in World Literature: From Tolstoy to Manga, a volume that enters into the conversation with the established scholarship of word and music studies, from Werner Wolf’s “The Musicalization of Fiction” (1999) to The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature (2022). By extending the intellectual inquiry into new cultural and medial territories—from the nineteenth-century Russian novel to the twenty-first-century Japanese graphic novel — this collection of essays seeks to broaden the geographical and generic reach of the field, offering a cross-cultural expansion of the largely Eurocentric frameworks that have dominated prior discussions.
