Exploring the Potential of Erosion-Accretion Zonation Mapping to Assess Short and Long-Term Shoreline Changes
摘要
To manage and understand the shoreline’s versatility in highly sensitive and dynamic morphological coastal regions like Sundarban, erosion-accretion zonation mapping is the most critical and strategic tool. Short-term shoreline changes zonation mapping recorded the urgent geomorphic modification driven by storm surges, cyclones, saltwater intrusion, flooding, tidal fluctuation, ecosystem change, embankment reinforcement, and livelihood rescue. On the other hand, long-term zonation revealed the erosion-accretion trend, insightful planning of sustainable land use patterns, biodiversity restoration, climate change adaptation, and mangrove regeneration. With the combination of short and long-term zonation mapping, temporary to permanent trends of shoreline modification have been analyzed and demarked the hotspot erosional zones in the Indian Sundarbans region. From the zonation strategic tool, sediment accumulation areas have also been reached quickly, so the mangrove can easily regenerate. Integrating both long and short-term zonation mapping increases resilience by aligning urgent response strategies with maximum sustainability goals in this climate-susceptible deltaic mangrove ecosystem.
