Our chapter reflects on the politics of memory and forgetting prompted by the exhumation of corpses belonging to a historic cemetery located in the coast of northern Chile. The archaeological research conducted in the site provided a useful example and information to recognize geomorphological activities, like tsunamis and mudslides, taking part in taphonomic processes of site formation in decisive ways. Being a geographical region that is commonly affected by natural disasters, the northern coast of Chile had not previously received proper attention until very recently. Because of the scale of intervention, our site not only provides valuable information for comparison and recognition of these phenomena but also provides a reflective glimpse through the consideration of historical and contemporary experiencing of disasters and social change. We conclude this chapter with a short discussion on how new monuments and ways of monumentalization are part of an ongoing process that drags certain pasts into oblivion.

摘要
