Learning Professional Practice in a Graphic Design Curriculum
摘要
Lecturing Design practice in a Higher Education Institution (HEI) has become increasingly complex, attending to the present interdisciplinary role of graphic design, whereas digital or print. Throughout a 3-year graphic design and print production undergraduate course, students attend vocational classes developing occupational tools and methodologies, practicing an envisioned mindset in a Problem Based Learning (PBL) setting. Design nowadays addresses various problems of interdisciplinary nature, extending beyond one single medium and requiring critical thinking aptitudes to address issues. The question arises, what is expected from junior designers upon completion of their vocational degree (e.g., BA/BFA in Graphic Design, MA in UX Design), regarding specific vocational skills and best practices towards a smooth professional integration. The aim of this research is to understand if students, within an academic context, are prepared to address diverse case studies, attending to underlying issues in different contexts, and thus able to create, design and develop tangible solutions.
