Scandium Alloying Practice in Aluminum Alloy, Dissolution Study of an Al-2wt.% Sc Master Alloy and Al–Sc Master Alloy Production from Sc2O3
摘要
ScandiumScandium is one of the alloying elements that can improve the propertiesProperties of aluminum alloysAluminum alloy. A number of methods for producing Al–Sc alloys are discussed in this paper with the most common route being the addition of Al-2wt.% Sc master alloyMaster alloy to aluminumAluminum creating a designated alloy. Typically, a master alloyMaster alloy containing 2wt.% Sc is used. In this study, dissolutionDissolution of Al-2wt.% Sc master alloyMaster alloy into pure aluminumAluminum was investigated to create an Al-0.2wt.% Sc alloy. The available literature provides limited insight into the dissolutionDissolution behavior of such master alloysMaster alloy; however, our results show that the process is rapid, with complete dissolutionDissolution achieved within one minute. An alternative route for producing the master alloy using Sc2O3 was also tested, and the results confirm the feasibility of using this route. These results contribute to improving the efficiency of castingCasting operations aimed at the production of Al–Sc alloys.
