Decarbonization in the Context of Processing Jamaican Goethitic Bauxite
摘要
BauxiteBauxite/alumina refineriesAlumina refinery around the world are actively decarbonizing their operations and greening their production processes. Jamaican Bayer refineries however are facing challenges because the hematiteHematite-rich ores that are traditionally processed in low temperature plants have become scarce and are being replaced by goethitic ores. The goethitic ores settle poorly and have significantly higher concentrations of phosphorus, boehmite and metal impurities. This work reviews the challenges associated with processingProcessing goethitic Jamaican bauxitesBauxite and considers the likely impacts on energyEnergy requirements and carbon emissionsCarbon emissions. Process options that facilitate efficient clarification of digester blow-off slurries and minimize aluminaAlumina losses are proposed. If infrastructure at local bauxiteBauxite plants are appropriately modernized, they should be able to successfully process goethitic bauxiteBauxite blends while making major progress towards decarbonizing their operations.
